The first ever injected composite polymer unibody racing drone. Race ready, 120km/h top speed and up to 11 minutes flight time out of the box.

PLASTIC IS FANTASTIC

Built from a virtually unbreakable custom material mix that not only protects all of your electronics, but also maintains its shape after impacts. The manufacturing process has been a tedious research process and a careful balancing act between rigidity, durability and weight. The end result is a sleek looking, highly aerodynamic, ultra durable racing, long-range or freestyle drone that will not disappoint!

BEGINNER FRIENDLY

From box to air in 5 minutes. That is the promise of both the RTF and the complete set version of the TBS Oblivion. The Velocidrone FPV simulator has the model pre-built inside, so you can practice from the comfort of your couch before putting the real drone at risk!

MODULAR DESIGN

The entire drone is built from countless self-contained parts working together hand in hand for a unified user experience. With just the right amount of exposure to the inner workings of a modern racing drone, anyone can start their adventure into this amazing hobby, replace parts and repair their drone without soldering, push their limits as pilots and fly through the sky like a bird hellbent on adventure!

Overview: TBS Oblivion Racing Drone – Unveiling the Quad’s Features

The TBS Oblivion stands as a pre-built racing drone, meticulously crafted with emphasis on usability and durability, according to Team Black Sheep. Asserting an impressive top speed of 120 km/h and a hover time of up to 11 minutes, the Oblivion promises an exhilarating flying experience. However, the pertinent question arises: does it truly justify the investment? Let’s delve into the details.

Note: This analysis is not a review; rather, it represents insights drawn from the quad’s specifications. For comprehensive guidance on initiating drone racing and mini quad FPV, explore our detailed article.

Specifications:

  • Flight Controller: TBS Colibri F3
  • Motors: Custom Cobra CT-2205 2400kV
  • ESC: TBS PowerCube 25A (3S-6S, BLHeli-S, No DShot)
  • VTX: FPVision (Unify 25-800mw)
  • FPV Camera: TBS 650TVL
  • Motor to Motor Distance: 190mm
  • Dry weight (without battery): 315g

While the 2205 motors and low KV configuration exhibit efficiency for lightweight builds, potential concerns arise when accommodating an HD camera, potentially resulting in the quad feeling underpowered.

One notable drawback is the dated ESC system – the PowerCube operates on BLHeli_S with no DShot support. Furthermore, its weight and bulkiness may overshadow its practicality, constituting a tall stack of six boards: four single ESC boards, along with the FC and VTX, connected by copper standoffs for power transfer.

Additional Considerations:

  • The TBS Oblivion does not include a radio receiver, necessitating a separate purchase and installation. However, it does support popular RX protocols, including CRSF, S-Bus, and Spektrum DSMX.

Unique Aspect: The Frame: The TBS Oblivion’s primary appeal lies in its frame construction. Diverging from the conventional use of carbon fiber, it features a frame and canopy crafted from injected composite polymer, offering enhanced aerodynamics and efficiency.

For those inclined towards customization, the frame alone can be acquired for approximately $40 from GetFPV. TBS asserts that the modular design minimizes soldering requirements, simplifying repair and upgrade processes. The frame accommodates 20x20mm and 30x30mm stacks, broadening compatibility with diverse hardware configurations.

Closing Thoughts: Despite the multiple requests for a review, the quad’s specifications, predominantly comprising older TBS components, failed to evoke excitement. Concerns about potential under-powering when integrating a GoPro further dampened enthusiasm.

Arguably, the most intriguing element is the innovative plastic frame, a deviation from the industry norm of carbon fiber. The plastic construction, along with the modular design, supports a more streamlined shape and facilitates easier repairs and upgrades.

While some users have opted for additional upgrades to enhance the Oblivion, the question lingers: why invest more in upgrades when one could secure all desired components from the outset? The narrative leaves room for a wish that the Oblivion transcended being merely a distinctive frame, offering a more compelling overall package.
